Rest in Peace, Whitney

It's been a while since I've had time to post anything, but as soon as I learned of Whitney Houston's death yesterday I felt like I had to share in the shock and grief I am sure most of the world is feeling.  I am heartbroken, utterly heartbroken.

It sounds so trite to say the words "tragic loss" when describing this beautiful, talented woman's passing.  The fact of the matter is we lost Whitney Houston a long time ago.

I was in high school when she first hit the airwaves.

Greatest Christmas Movies EVER

It's been a busy time around La Casa DeMarco, what with tree trimmin', gift wrappin', cookie bakin',  cocoa sippin' and whatnot, but as I gaze lovingly at my DVD collection for the right flicks to watch this Christmas weekend a couple of thoughts pop into my mind.

1.  I've got waaaaayyy too many DVD's

and

2.  The reasons these movies are my  all-time favorite Chistmas flicks are not in any way normal.

Grab a mug of cocoa, strap yourselves in, and get ready for a look at what'll be on my TV this weekend!

Christmas Light Shows

I scoured You Tube to find the coolest Christmas light shows... Here are some of the best.  Enjoy!

Thanksgiving Memories

Wednesday, November 26, 1975.

The four weeks removed from Halloween had passed in a blur.  For the first grade class at Robert Louis Stevenson School, life revolved around one thing and one thing only:The First Thanksgiving.  We were not going to make it out of that autumn without putting on a play for our parents.

Our teacher, Miss Grimm, had to have been a believer in Method Acting, because she was relentless. The entire month of November was spent living as the Pilgrims and Indians did.

A Week of Terrible Anniversaries

Ninety-eight years ago this week, a storm of unparalleled fury struck the Great Lakes.  Known today as the Great Storm of 1913, what began as a typical autumn gale that many believed would blow itself out in a few hours, became instead the kind of storm by which all others are measured.

Hurricane-force winds blew non-stop for over sixteen hours, white-out blizzards left shipmasters blind and at the mercy of a cruel 35-foot chop that pounded gaping holes into their boats.

All the COOL People Were Born in November!!

And it's true!  The most awesome people in the world were born in November.  After reading this list, I defy you to tell me otherwise.

On November 1, we've got Stephen Crane.  Writer.  Alcoholic. Dope addict.  Wrote the Red Badge of Courage, one of the greatest Civil War novels of all time, and was a war correspondent during the Spanish American War in 1899.

On November 2, we've got Mr. Hand himself, Ray Walston.

In Memoriam... Andrea Gail

"She's comin' on, boys... And she's comin' on strong!"
Last transmission from Billy Tyne, Captain, F/VAndrea Gail

Twenty years ago this week, the Halloween Nor'easter of 1991 devastated the northeast coasts of the United States and Canada.  Caught in this "perfect storm" was the F/VAndrea Gail, a 72-foot fishing vessel that sailed out of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

The story of the men of theAndrea Gailwas told to the world by the incomparable Sebastian Junger in his book,

Scary Halloween Movies-- Part 4... Devil Movies

If you really want to scare me, make me watch a movie that involves the Devil.  I saved this group for last because this is the horror sub-genre that scares the living shit out of me.  Oh sure, zombies and werewolves and ghosts and ax-wielding homicidal maniacs have their moments... but I grew up Catholic.  To me, the Devil is real.  And he does horrible things.

The Omen
(1976)

Ambassador Robert Thorne has a problem.  His wife's baby has allegedly been stillborn.

Scary Movies-- Part 3... Zombie Apocalypse

Now we're getting into some heavy-duty, weapons-grade gore and terror.  These flicks are not about the voodoo brand zombie, but the scary as all hell, reanimated corpse kind.  This is the variety of undead that likes to eat people (which, in turn, makes more zombies).

Night of the Living Dead
(1968)

While not the first zombie flick ever made, it was the first to feature cannibalism as a major character trait in the undead.  There have been a kajillion sequels and remakes, but none have ever come close to the ick factor of the original.
